Rough Cut

“Your face is what makes you money, so stop spitting on it.” ( from the film)

In filmmaking, the rough cut is the second of three stages of editing, the stage in which the film begins to resemble its final product. Rough cuts do not flow well and still undergo many changes before the release of the film. Gang-pae is a high-ranking gangster who is swamped with routine violence and dreams of becoming an actor. Meanwhile celebrity actor Soo-ta lives behind a veil, away from public eyes. But over time his behavior becomes increasingly agitated, provoked by paparazzi wanting a piece of him wherever he goes. His agitation leads to a series of spiraling and uncontrollable situations. He begins shooting a new movie, playing the role of a gangster, ends up beating up a fellow actor and forcing the production to a halt. Feeling responsible, Soo-ta asks Gang-pae, whom he meets by chance, to take on the role in order to save the production. Gang-pae agrees on the condition that the violence portrayed in the movie has to be real, not fake acting violence. Soo-ta accepts and they prepare for combat. As filming progresses however, the line between reality and film making begin to cross as Gang- pae’s dangerous world refuses to take a back seat for his new hobby. Rough Cut is one of the most striking action films to emerge from South Korea in recent years.
