Winter Silence

Beautiful visuals and an innovative use of sound mark video artist Sonja Wyss’ striking debut feature. Jammed between the rocky Swiss mountains is a remote snowed-in village and in that village is the log cabin where a family lives. When the man dies, the widow and her four daughters are left to a suspended, dream-like period of mourning. Winter Silence is a visual fairy tale on Catholic life, spiced with mythological motifs in the form of mysterious deer men, watchful owls, little girls who fill the valleys with birds and obsessions. “Some people claim that it is better for dreams to remain dreams than that they become reality. In this case I do not agree,” says Wyss when talking about her film. Bringing her craft of experimental composition in video art, Wyss uses words minimally and creates the illusion of silence with her extraordinary sound design, which went on to win an award in the Netherlands Film Festival. Visuals like an extraordinary scene where the four daughters weave in a synchronized rhythm or the little girl letting birds out of her hands to fill the sky stay with you long after the film is over. More than linear narrative Winter Silence is like a poetic experience reminding the audience of the authentic power of cinema.

About the Director
Sonja Wyss
Born in 1967, Sonja Wyss is a Swiss visual
artist. She has exhibited mainly in Netherlands,
Germany and Switzerland. Her award-winning
video films include Get of My Back (1996)
and To Date (1999). Her video film Hello Miss
Stirnimaa (1999) was selected for the Directors’
Fortnight in Cannes. Winter Silence (2008) is
Wyss’s first feature film.
