White Lightnin’
White Lightnin’
“Jesse can be three people: He is Jesse, he is Jesco, and he is Elvis.” Norma Jean White: Jesco White’s wife (from the film)
Crossing over from advertising to cinema, British director Dominic Murphy takes his camera to the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia to reimagine the life of the ‘dancing outlaw’ Jesco White. The real- life mountain dancer White, who became a larger-than-life postmodern celebrity in the last decade with his unique performances and a past filled with substance abuse and poverty, soon transforms into a fictional deranged rock hero under Murphy’s unapologetic lens. The movie chronicles the life of Jesco, beginning with a ten-year-old kid sniffing lighter fluid and moving in and out of concentration camps disguised as reform schools, and later insane asylums. The only way out for Jesco in a life filled with drug-induced misery becomes the craft of mountain dancing, a blend of tap dancing and local clogging to country banjo music. Inherited from his father, D. Ray, a local celebrity himself, Jesco takes his art to the road. “My life’s been a party... and a joke... and a tragedy,” recalls Jesco, in one of the heated moments of his troubled but passionate relationship with Cilla. Jesco and Cilla become distorted versions of Johnny and June in a world fuelled with alcohol, drugs, a demented fundamentalism, the occasional mountain dancing, and the ghosts of Elvis memorabilia. With his angelic face, Edward Hogg brings out the vulnerability of this brand new Jesco, while in the role of Cilla, Carrie Fisher becomes another warrior in love in a land far far away.
