Politist, adj.
Police, Adjective
“He’s applying the law you see, he could be God.” (director)
Corneliu Porumboiu has followed up his Caméra d’Or - winning 12:08 East of Bucharest with the excellent Police, Adjective, which establishes him as one of Europe’s most promising new talents. The story behind Police, Adjective is deceptively slight. Christi is a young undercover cop living in a small Romanian town who is assigned to conduct surveillance on a teenager who offered a joint to his friends in a school break. His boss wants the kid’s supplier found and jailed – or failing this, the youngster arrested. Cristi (Dragos Bucur) is really a pretty ordinary kind of guy but he is bright and frustrated. He decides to rebel in his own small way on grounds that busting the teenager is a pointless act. It will ruin the kid’s life, as he will face a mandatory jail sentence, and in addition, since neighbouring EU countries have already loosened their drug laws for small-time users, Cristi feels that Romania will soon do the same. But his moment of independence will have consequences that suddenly lay bare the surreal foundations of any society and the notion of law. Where does the law get its legitimacy from? Or words, for that matter? Police, Adjective is a powerfully intelligent cinematic enquiry that grips both the heart and the mind.
