Metropia
Metropia
“The crisis which connected everyone’s fate still left the individual isolated in his ruin.” (from the film)
Dystopia lovers, rejoice! Set in the not-so-distant future, Metropia shows a familiar but menacing Europe, where everyone speaks English. Oil reserves are running out, surveillance cameras dominate the land and a web of underground lines link key cities, creating a vast transport network running beneath the surface. Roger is a pretty average guy living a humdrum life in the suburbs of Stockholm. He rides his bike to work to avoid the creepy underground and is wary of the corporation-dominated world he sees. His paranoia is further aroused when he begins to hear strange voices in his head: is someone trying to control him; and if so, why? A moody, darkly atmospheric thriller, Metropia uses an innovative animation technique based on actual photographs to create a unique world saturated in shades of grey and blue. The stellar voice cast includes Vincent Gallo, Stellan Skarsgaard, Juliette Lewis and Alexander Skarsgaard. In his previous film Gitmo (2005), also shown at !f, director Saleh documented his visit to the equally bleak, but all too real island prison Guantanamo. Here, in the tradition of dystopian films like 1984 and Blade Runner, he paints an eerily familiar picture of a deeply oppressive consumerist society where greed runs rampant and freedom is dubious.
