Married To The Camera
“But first Ahmet will tell us about himself. We’ll be looking for his potentials… Right after the commercials.” Esra Erol ( from the film)
Every morning, millions in Turkey are glued to their screens for the TV show ‘Marriage with Esra Erol’. The program aims to match and marry people in front of the camera. Every detail about the dreams and fears of the selected lucky ones is shown onscreen, tugging at the hearts of spectators in the studio as well as in every city, town or village with a TV signal. Esra Erol: She runs the show. She seems very much at ease on stage, but prays for good luck everyday backstage. The director: He whispers tips in Esra’s headpiece on how to make the show livelier. His biggest dream is to make documentaries. The lady in the studio audience, Sakine: She goes from program to program, and gets paid to make comments. The audience: They stand up and clap when they are told to. A boxer arrives with his boxing gloves, a 75 year old granddad seeks a wife with whom he can spend the autumn of his life in a nursing home; stories abound. The key to looking and seeing, director Doğa Kılcıoğlu seems to remind us, is the sincerity in the eye of the beholder.
About the Director
Doğa Kılcıoğlu
Born in 1980 in İzmir, Doğa Kılcıoğlu graduated from
Galatasaray University. While she was a student at
the university she made a documentary film, With
Three Ears (2003) which was screened at !f and went
on to win the Best Documentary Award at the 2003
Golden Orange Film Festival. She then made another
documentary, 1 2 3 ZIP (2006). In 2005, she attended
Paris Sorbonne University to study film. She also worked
as the producer and art director of the short film Cat on
the Road (2007) which received 11 awards. She and
Can Kılcıoğlu formed DeliCe Film in 2008.
