“The main location of Here was a disused mental hospital. I was keen on the idea that the activities we carried out in the film would repeat and thus activate the past of that location… The hospital was really a purgatorial space that was soaked in a haze of blissful inertia – quiet, peaceful, warm, and even comfortable.” Ho Tzu Yen (from director)

Here speaks about being ‘here’, having chosen to be ‘here’, and asks subtle yet forceful questions of living and remembering, making films and then watching them. Here follows the journey of He Zhiyuan, a mid- dle-aged man who struggles to make sense of his reality. One day, a television switches on, his mind snaps and He Zhiyuan discovers his murdered wife lying on the kitchen floor. The events leading to her death play before him, like in a movie. He loses the will to speak and is taken to a mental institution, the Island Hospital. There, he meets kleptomaniac Beatrice with whom he forms an inexplicable bond. As he adjusts to life within, he is selected for an experimental treatment which forces him to confront the devastating truth behind his past, present, and future. ‘Videocure’ involves filming patients reliving a crucial moment in their lives, editing it with them and then having them watch it again. Meanwhile, a filmmaker visits Island Hospital to document the lives of the staff and patients. Shot in an unused mental hospital, Here seems to document what may have happened there in the past. But it is also a romance and a piece of art of hypnotic serenity and dreamy melancholy.
