Gigante
Gigante

“Nothing escapes the camera.” Adrián Biniez (director)

Jara is a quiet giant, a shy security guard who works late shifts at a Montevideo supermarket. He loves heavy-metal music, reads, does the crossword and mostly keeps to himself. His long night shifts become more bearable when he spots Julia, a young woman who mops the floors, over the surveillance cameras. Too shy to start a conversation, he starts trailing her and occasionally stepping in to intervene. When an irritating boss threatens Julia, he has him conveniently paged over the loudspeaker; when she goes to an Internet cafe, he sits in a corner and spies on her. Eventually, though, changes at the workplace require him to confront his secret obsession. From the production team behind the award-winning Whisky and winner of three awards at the Berlin Film Festival, Gigante is a film of few words and striking power; Jara’s pierc- ing blue eyes speak volumes for all that he cannot bring himself to utter. Debut director Adrián Biniez’s feat is to build this character study with great patience, teasing our sympathies and maintaining the air of mystery surrounding Jara till the very end. Gigante is a beautifully shot, witty and original tale of boy- meets-girl which lingers.
