Food, Inc
Food, Inc.
“Although it looks like a tomato, it's kind of a notional tomato. I mean, it's the idea of a tomato.” Michael Pollan (from the book named Omnivore’s Dilemma)
Today, the lifespan of a chicken grown for the American food industry is six weeks. Grown in cages too small for them to move, they live in perpetual darkness. They are so fat they cannot stand up. Ever. An American farmer cannot grow his own corn anymore - legally speaking, there is only Monsanto’s genetically modified and patented corn. The meat America eats comes from only four different corporations. As chicken breasts get bigger and tomatoes are genetically engineered not to go bad, 73,000 Americans fall ill from powerful new strains of E. coli every year, obesity levels are skyrocketing, and adult diabetes has reached epidemic proportions. Food, Inc. is about where the food Americans purchase at their grocery stores really comes from, and what it means for the health of future generations. It is also a story about the comfortable relationships between businesses as usual and the government - against consumer health, the American farmer, worker safety, animal rights and the environment. Particularly at this time of campaigning against the proposed introduction of GM foods in Turkey, this horror movie of our civilization is a chilling wake-up call. The dangerous truth about what we eat is connected to other truths about industry, exploitation and greed. Food, Inc. is eye opening, shocking and very often, disgusting.
