Double Take
Double Take

“We have scripted this moment together.” (from the film)

“They say that if you meet your double, you should kill him. Or that he will kill you. I can’t remember,” muses Alfred Hitchcock, or the voiceover impersonating him, or the man who had a career of impersonating Hitchcock. It doesn’t really matter who says what in this part documentary, part ‘mockumentary,’ part avant-garde look at the Ameri- can sensibilities of the ‘60s, reflected through Alfred Hitchcock, Richard Nixon, and countless footage of Folgers coffee commercials. Director and writer Johan Grimonprez and co-writer Tom McCarthy capture the demented spirit of an era through real and fictional split personalities of Alfred Hitchcock. The Master of Suspense shares his paranoia through a very convincing voiceover by Mark Perry while real footage of the TV spots and commercials Hitchcock did for his movies and the TV series ‘Alfred Hitchcock Presents’ are thrown in haphazardly. Among dozens of films by Hitchcock, The Birds takes center stage as a metaphor for the Cold War, and the Communists hovering above the Americans. “Two of you is one too many,” says one of the any number of Hitchcock versions, as the scene cuts to the famous Kitchen Debate between Nixon and Khruschev of 1959. American paranoia takes a whole new dimension amidst footage of Diana Ross and the Supremes performing, or shots of Laika, the first dog to orbit the earth, in this wonderfully bizarre subversion of genres that throws wide open questions as to the fictions that govern our lives –then, and now.
