“The One up there will open the road for me someday.” (from the film)
A bag full of money lands on the ground in front of you. Is it luck? The answer to your prayers? Part of a pre-determined plan? Or, all of the above? Set in the chaotic streets of Istanbul, 40 is the story of three strangers making their way in a city of 12 million, all searching…for one bag. Metin, a young guy from an Eastern Anatolian village fled a horrific home life for the promise of “more” in the city. To survive, he uses his cab as a front to deliver drugs to İstanbul’s elite. But like a bad Turkish film, he believes his life is cursed. Godwill, on the other hand, a naïve Nigerian immigrant, is a man of miracles. He’s ended up in Istanbul, one of thousands of illegal Africans, and works day and night saving every penny to pay for his illegal passage to Europe. Sevda, a nurse, can’t seem to find her place. She’s dabbled in Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, and now she’s using the science of numerology to chart her course. 40 revolves around the bizarre events that Metin, Godwill and Sevda become caught up in during one strange and stormy week in November. Fast-paced and stylishly shot, 40 leaves us questioning the sacrosanctity of numbers, faith, destiny and just plain luck.

About the Director
Emre Şahin
Born in İstanbul, Şahin first moved to the USA
to study film at Boston’s Emerson College. His
student film Fetish was awarded two EVVY
Awards for Best Film and Best Editing. Şahin
directed and edited documentary and television
shows for networks such as ABC, MTV, VH1 and
The History Channel. He worked with Academy
Award nominee Randall Wallace, directing Fight
or Die for the Discovery channel. 40 is Şahin’s
first feature film.
